The thing we pay closer attention to than most is the climate. Plenty of good kitchen products were designed and tested for a house that stays between 65 and 80 degrees all year. A Palm Springs house in August can sit much hotter than that, especially a second home or rental that is closed between guests. The air is dry, the sun is hard, and the water leaves scale on everything. Those conditions find the weak point in a kitchen quickly, and the weak point is usually a finish or a glue line rather than the cabinets themselves.

How That Changes the Work

It changes what we recommend. We will talk you out of thermofoil doors next to a range, suggest a porcelain or granite run where the counter sits under a clerestory window, and point out that a butcher block top needs oiling on a schedule in air this dry.

It changes when we work. Tile, stone seams and anything glued are done in the cooler morning hours, with materials kept indoors so they are inside the temperature range printed on the label when they go on.

And it changes what we will tell you not to buy. If your cabinet boxes are solid plywood and the layout works, refacing them is often the smarter spend. If the counter is sound and only the edge band has let go, that is a repair, not a replacement.

Permits and Older Homes

Work that moves walls, circuits or plumbing is permitted through the City of Palm Springs and inspected. In post and beam houses we check framing before anyone proposes taking out a wall, and on historic properties we confirm what can change on the exterior before a new vent is drawn.
